Install Open Media Vault On Usb Stick
I've been trying to install OpenMediaVault 4.1.3
from an usb stick on my HP Microserver Gen8. I created the boot stick in various ways (dd
, etcher
, UNetbootin
) but during installation (in the partitioning step) I repeatedly ended up with the following error message (and later 'creating ext4 file system failed' appeared):
Poweredge T300 Boot From USB. Linux Mint / Ubuntu USB-Stick zur Installation erstellen und booten, Anleitung auf Deutsch - Duration: 4:26. Maxico Anleitungen und.
To create the stick with dd
, I followed the official instructions here. I also made sure that SATA support is set to AHCI and I also tested versions 3.0.94 and 4.0.14.

What can I do to solve this issue?
1 Answer
I've managed to solve the issue in the following way:
- burn the openmediavault iso on a cd
format the usb stick with ext4 file system, under macOS I did this with:
2.1
brew install e2fsprogs
2.2
sudo $(brew --prefix e2fsprogs)/sbin/mkfs.ext4 /dev/disk3
plug in the ext4-formatted usb stick, boot from cd and follow the installation wizard -> partitioning doesn't fail in this constellation for me

How To Install Open Media Vault
XYZ1
Beginner
Hi,
I want to buy the HP ProLiant MicroServer N54L and use Open Media Vault with 2x 1.5TB harddisks in RAID1.
Additionally to the external USB ports, the N54L also has one internal USB port.
Based on my understanding and according to the Wiki (wiki.openmediavault.org/index.php?title=Installation) it would be possible to install Open Media Vault 'on' a USB stick.
However, accordingto the Wiki it's not recommended:
What is your experience?
Are there any disadvantages?
Thanks and best regards!
P.S.: I was also searching for this topic within the forum but could only find how to install Open Media Vault 'from' a USB stick, whereas I want to install it 'on' a USB stick.
